Bwindi's Four Trekking Sectors
Bwindi Impenetrable National Park spans 321 km² and is managed as four separate trekking sectors — each with distinct gorilla families, terrain, and character.
Uganda Wildlife Authority divides Bwindi Impenetrable National Park into four distinct trekking sectors: Buhoma in the north, Ruhija in the east, Rushaga in the south, and Nkuringo in the south-west. Each has its own entrance gate, ranger station, set of habituated gorilla families, and character. Permits are issued per sector — choosing a sector is the first practical decision in planning a Bwindi gorilla trek.
The sectors are not connected by trails; moving between them requires road travel. They share the same forest ecosystem but occupy different altitudinal zones, which affects terrain, temperature, and wildlife encountered outside the gorilla encounter itself.
Buhoma
Northern BwindiGorilla families: Mubare, Habinyanja, Rushegura
Uganda's original gorilla tourism hub, operating since 1993. Park headquarters are here, and the Mubare group was the first habituated family in the country.
Ruhija
Eastern BwindiGorilla families: Bitukura, Oruzogo
The highest and most remote of the four sectors. Ruhija is Bwindi's premier birding destination and offers the most consistently cool temperatures.
Rushaga
Southern BwindiGorilla families: Bweza, Busingye, Kahungye, Mishaya, Nshongi
The sector with the most habituated gorilla families. Rushaga also offers gorilla habituation experience permits — a longer, more intimate encounter.
Nkuringo
South-western BwindiGorilla families: Nkuringo, Christmas
The sector with the most dramatic scenery, perched on a ridge with views across the Albertine Rift. The trekking terrain is steep and the experience is considered the most challenging.
